Practicing as a Nurse / Midwife in Malta – NON-EU Trained Nurses and Midwives
NON-EU Trained nurses/midwives are to apply for registration under the Temporary Registration 1st level nurse category since if the Council approves registration, this will be granted on a Temporary basis of 24 months. Information about the requirements for registration are found in link below

Important notice: Kindly note that as from 1st January 2025 all non-EU trained applicants must submit a Primary Source Verification certificate from a reputable company with their application for registration.
Non-EU nursing bridging courses
All applicants who submit their application for registration as a Nurse are required to attend a non-EU nursing bridging course which is currently being offered by MCAST, University of Malta, IDEA Academy and APEX to be able to complete the registration process (please refer to links below)

Missing documents
Please note that all the required documents must be submitted with your application, and should the Council request you to send any additional documents these must be submitted within 3 months of the date of your application and should the requested documents not be presented, application fee of €192.50 not refundable. If an applicant would want to pursue the application after this time has elapsed, he or she has will have to initiate the process as a new application.
Language certificates
Applications without the required IELTS academic certificate with an average score of at least 6 or OET with scores of B in speaking and at least C+ in writing, reading and listening cannot be accepted for registration. Certificates presented to the Council have to be valid and not surpassed their expiry date when the application is submitted to the Counci
Renewal of nursing registration of NON-EU trained Nurses and Midwives
Non-EU trained Registered nurses and midwives who have been granted temporary registration and need to apply for renewal of the registration, must do so 1 month before the date of the expiry on the registration certificate. To be eligible for renewal a nurse of midwife must proof that he or she has practiced the profession in Malta during the whole period of the registration and can apply for renewal by sending the documents below scanned in pdf format to by email to [email protected]
- Email asking to renew the registration with updated personal details and address
- Copy of the Registration certificate
- Last 3 pay slips
- Copy of your ID card/resident permit
- Recent police conduct certificate or GP 47 in case of government employees
- Reference letter from your direct supervisor/s of the last two years to confirm that you have been employed as a nurse and have been practicing the nursing profession
- Employment record from Jobs plus
Kindly note that all registered nurses are to inform the Registrar within 1 week of any changes of address or personal details, this can be done preferably through the online portal at Nurses and Midwives Council (gov.mt) or in case of any difficulty by sending an email with the information to [email protected]
Appeal
In cases of dispute between the Council’s / Committee’s and the applicant;
In accordance to Health Care Professions Act 2003, Cap 464, a person may file an appeal with the Appeals Committee within 20 calendar days from the date of the correspondence received from the Council for Nurses and Midwives.
